The Growth Of Wind Power Systems

The whole World is realizing the need to look at alternative ways to generate energy. In some countries they are becoming popular, but Canada has been making use of wind power systems for years. It has become widely accepted within the local and business communities as the means of generating their power requirements.

Canada has been looking for a way to use the wealth of natural resources it has on its doorstep. It realizes that it has to supplement the energy that the more traditional methods of coal and water fed power stations. And may have to replace them completely in the future.

Because wind generated electricity is a great renewable resource and is also good for the environment, the Canadian Wind Energy Association has implemented a strategy to introduce more wind energy usage in the country. According to the Association, there should be 55,000 MW produced in Canada by the year 2025.

Ontario was the first province to embrace the use of wind power, but Quebec and Alberta have now joined in and others are making good progress in this field. When this century began all of the provinces had done something about implementing a plan to move towards using renewable energy. They all know that they have to build wind farms, or some other method of sourcing alternate energy, as the traditional methods are running out of supplies.

There is only the province of British Columbia that does not currently have a way to source power from the elements. But they are now making progress and will catch up with other provinces soon. They have negotiated a deal to purchase 300 MW of electricity that has been generated by the use of wind farms. The future where all of the citizens of Canada can benefit from the generation of renewable energy is becoming a reality.

Even with all these plans in place and the building of wind farms flourishing, compared with traditional sources wind power is only responsible for a small amount of energy produced. The wind farms that are currently operating in the country are generating about 2300 MW but as the number of wind farms increases so will their output.

Detroit and Chicago are beginning to take notice of what is happening just over the border in Canada. They are considering using renewable energies, including the power of the wind, to provide the energy required to supply the many businesses and plants in their region. The effect that this will have on the environment and the budgets of local government and enterprises that buy into it will be fantastic. Even if it is impractical to rely totally on wind power there is the idea to build more hybrid power stations.

But it is not just governments and big business that can benefit from this trend towards using alternative sources of green energy and other programs like the Feed in Tarriff program. Residents can also get in on the act and buy equipment to create their own power from the wind. A small wind turbine would cost approximately $5000 and generate in the region of 25% to 30% of the amount of power that is normally needed domestically. If you have more space you could go for something that generates more energy, even up to 50%, but you will have to pay about $7000 for the equipment. If your requirements are a bit lower than that and you want to power your off-grid cabin you can get a machine that will supply 200 watts for as little as $600.

It is noted that Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies region of Canada are regions with strong potential for solar power. Canada does not yet use much solar energy to produce electricity, though its government has produced studies showing this could change by 2025, with solar power providing 5 percent of electricity by then. Canada does use solar power more regularly for heating buildings and water as well as drying lumber and crops.

Many areas of Canada are hard to reach and/or sparsely populated. Thus, they do not have easy access to the nation’s energy grid. Here solar power is already put to use through photovoltaic cells. PV cells, when exposed to light, use semiconductor materials to generate directly electric power. In the northern provinces and territory, they have are used as standalone units to distribute electricity, particularly for remote homes, telecommunications equipment and navigational devices. Because they replace the costly diesel fuel systems that used to provide this energy, they also benefit the economy of these areas.

Canada is beginning to increase its reliance on wind power. There are already ninety-nine wind farms generating a little over one percent of Canadian electricity. According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, the building of new wind farms could allow the country to reach 55,000 MW by 2025. That is twenty percent of Canada’s energy requirements.

Ontario is a demonstrative case of how new energy initiatives in Canada can enhance the economy. They recently passed the Green Energy and Green Economy Act of 2009. One of the provisions of the act is to offer low- or no-interest loans to homeowners in order to pay for the cost of using renewable alternative energy generators and to make their homes more energy efficient.

British Columbia is turning toward a green economy the creation of which has already produced 117,000 full time jobs and makes up over fifteen billion dollars of the province’s GDP. GLOBE Foundation of Canada has estimated British Columbia’s development of a renewable resource economy will make the province worth over twenty-seven billion dollars in ten years.

Canada already has the resources and the systems in place for renewable alternative energy. It remains for the nation to decide how fully it wishes to develop and integrate them into the global green market and economy grid.

How Can Solar Energy Help The World?

Turning this question around to ask the true question, “How could solar energy not help the world”" might better impart solar energy’s true significance.

I wonder if you knew that one kerosene lamp, commonly used as the only lighting equipment in developing countries and rural areas, gives off about one ton of carbon emissions in seven years. Not that big a deal, you may be about to say. However, when you consider the 2.5 billion people globally who have only kerosene, other fossil fuels, or animal dung for light and heat, the impact begins to sink in, yes?

And…did you know the average US citizen produces 27 tons (54,000 pounds) of CO2 or equivalent a year from the use of fossil fuels? (statistics from Nature Conservancy). Wow…how’s that for a big footprint?

Using solar energy, the world can not only survive, but thrive, by providing access to basic needs and reducing environmental pollution. Not only is solar energy feasible for light, heat, and water, it’s vital for global survival and growth.

While many third world countries have abundant solar energy potential, many are unaware that it can be easily used as a power source. Today’s solar panels are predicted to have an average life of about 25 years, with a 10-year payback period. The costs are expected to decrease significantly with thin film technologies, which will also increase innovative use and flexibility of solar panels. This is particularly true for thin film batteries, where the market is exploding.

Solar energy is gaining ground worldwide. The technology works. More investment is being made in solar energy, and as it is more widely adopted, the economies of scale, together with more funding to create new technological efficiencies, will make solar energy more and more affordable. There is no question more and more individuals, companies and countries will move to solar energy as a power source for all their energy needs as fossil fuel prices continue to escalate.

Solar energy is here to stay…it works. And let’s be clear, the faster we start using solar energy to replace fossil fuels as our primary energy source, the better off our world will be.
